From farm to shipping
O. H. Meling & Co. AS began as a family business with roots on Austre Åmøy, where sea routes and the flow of goods into Stavanger were a natural part of everyday life. In 1923, Henrik O. Meling took a decisive step when he purchased Skagenkaien 12 by Vågen and established H. O. Meling & Co – “Landmannsgården”. With the waterside warehouse as its base, he built a busy reception and wholesale operation for potatoes, vegetables, hay and straw, creating an efficient link between farmers in the region and the Stavanger market—supplying other cities as demand required.
In the 1930s, the next generation became more prominent. Ola H. Meling gradually assumed greater responsibility and took over day-to-day management, while the business evolved in step with the city, the harbour and its customers. As its ties to shipping grew stronger, the company acquired its first vessel in 1948, Stavsund.
Through deliveries to maritime customers, the company moved from pure goods trading towards a more maritime focus. Over time, the name was carried forward and modernised to OH Meling & Co, and today the business operates as OH Meling & Co AS—still family-owned, firmly rooted locally, and built on reliability and long-standing relationships.
